Crunch Warp.
Life on the crispy edge.
We’re getting crunchy once again as we continue our crunch talk from last week. However, we’re going to approach this discussion from a different angle by pairing our Kiaayo Overdrive and Aakii Chorus/Vibrato. For the times where you might want to get a little kooky and live life on crispy edge, we’ll share insight on how to obtain some wild yet killer tones. Fair warning though, it’s dirty, mean, warbly, and unclean.
0:00 - 0:12 Bypass tone.
We’re playing a Fender Duo Sonic with a single-coil pickup in the neck and a humbucker in the bridge. All tones are played through a Fender Deluxe that’s set to a clean level.
0:13 - 0:33 I’m crunchin’.
We only want to add a little flavor to our chording on the single coils, so we’ll keep Kiaayo more towards 11 o’clock on gain. This amount gain adds a little fire under Kiaayo for a nice crispy breakup on the chording yet still gives us the sustain we need for riffing some lead lines.
0:34 - 0:56 And I’m warpin’.
Okay, now we’re talking. The party was already bumping but now Aakii brings it to a whole new level. Like a warpoon cannon set to warble your tone, we don’t hold back. Depth is more than halfway up for noticeable shift in pitch and rate is set to move at a speed that’ll rise above the mix. Speaking of mix, we’re sitting somewhere that has a nice blend of both chorus and vibrato sounds. With the slight introduction of chorus, it’ll add a nice little sparkle that’ll let the chords have some definition.
0:57 - 1:50 Dirty, mean, warbly, and unclean.
Ohhhhhhh man, here it is. We warned you. The pickup is now set to humbucker AKA ready-to-bring-the-fury mode. The tone, it’s so dirty, mean, warbly, and unclean. There’s something perfect about an unperfect tone. Between the not-so-clean grit of the chords being washed away in Aakii’s modulation and singing sustain of the lead line, this setup truly makes a stand-out tone that’ll be a great addition for when you’re ready for those kooky tones.
Let’s make some noise.
Now that we’ve explored the possible, let’s go and create the impossible. Visit here for Aakii and here for Kiaayo.
